I was excited to receive the 3 Stage Above & Beyond Tummy Time Mat by Infantino because the playmat looks good in photos and my son can definitely benefit from spending more time on the floor. The first activity mat I ever bought him was also by Infantino, the Deluxe Twist and Fold Activity Gym; he definitely enjoyed playing with that and so I was sure that he'd enjoy the tummy time mat as well.

When I opened the box and unfolded the contents, I was wowed by the design. The tummy time mat and its accessories definitely follow the underwater theme. The activity toys include a starfish-shaped bag that contains plastic rings, an octopus rattle, a fish-shaped teether, and a pillow. Behind the seashell, there's a mirror too. The mat itself has several fish and whales swimming near the bottom of the sea (which is populated by a crab, a starfish, a school of fish, and several corals.

Aside from the underwater theme that makes tummy time interesting for babies, the mat can be propped up and one of the toys can be hung from a loop in the seashell.

This playmat will certainly entertain younger babies who struggle with tummy time. But how about my son? He began to kneel, sit, stand, and cruise all in the span of a week (Christmas week, to be exact) and before the tummy time mat arrived. Does he enjoy this playmat despite already past the tummy time stage?

Yes, he does.

The biggest attractions for him are the different textures among the activity toys and between the top and bottom sides of the mat. Texture "observations" lead my son to several minutes of undirected play. I found that it is best to keep the mat flat on the ground because my son (at this time) can easily flatten the propped up seashell.

Now I understand why this product is Above and Beyond: the features that a baby focuses on changes as he/she grows, thereby providing a long time of fun.
