2010 Gawad Natatanging Lagunense (Outstanding Lagunense Awards)

I was officially star-struck being in the same table as Jiggy Manicad, having a photo with Sol Aragones (both awardees for broadcast journalism), and being on stage with Gov. Ningning Lazaro and other officials at the provincial level. To top that all off, I had the pleasure of being among the five finalists for the Gawad Natatanging Kabataan (Outstanding Youth Award)... and ultimately getting the prize.

High heels and long gown didn't stop me from taking photos, but I couldn't move too much with my talent of tripping over stairs, so Ate Madie shared the picture-taking assignment with me. =)

Thank you to Ate Madie and to Ginny for getting me involved in this competition; and to Bob and Melissa for the glowing commendations; and to my stage aunts (the stage mother called up right after the ceremonies) for being there with me.

    5th year na nagbibigay ang provincial government ng awards, ayon sa interview panel. pero lahat kaming finalists nalaman lang ang competition nung binigay sa amin yung form na sinagutan namin. dahil dumadami na ang mga awardees at finalists, tingin ko mas magiging publicised itong competition sa mga susunod na taon. =)

    hindi ko lang alam kung naiulat na ni jiggy manicad ito kagabi... or kung gagawing feature. may kasama siyang camera crew kasi.

    @biboy: kaya mukhang matangkad gawa nung sapatos =) at nakow, hindi pa sanay tumanggap ng awards. star struck pa rin nung nakita ko yung ibang mga awardees. may soprano, dance troupe, news reporters, etc. at first time kong nakapag papicture na kasama mga government officials. hehehe. buti hindi ako natalisod talaga. sobrang wa poise yun kung nalaglag ako.

    ang kagandahan pati ng gawad na ito, iba iba ang categories. kaya may natatanging bumbero, natatanging pulis, natatanging guro, natataning alagad ng sining, etc. at yung bihira makilala na natatangi, binigyan ng award. tulad nung mga malaki ang itinulong nung sumalanta ang mga bagyo noong 2009.

How MALDI-TOF-MS makes mycobacterium diagnosis faster and more accurate

The laboratory I work in has plenty of instruments that help us characterise and identify microorganisms causing diseases in patients. One of my current projects is to validate an instrument called "matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometer" (MALDI-TOF-MS) in identifying members of the Mycobacterium  species. Many of these organisms are opportunistic, meaning they only cause illnesses in people whose immune systems are not strong enough to fight infections. Mycobacterium leprae  is known for causing leprosy, but we cannot grow this bacterium in culture media, so we cannot isolate it. Mycobacterium tuberculosis  complex, on the other hand, is a group of several species of Mycobacterium  that causes tuberculosis. Skyflakes

One of the more famous Philippine exports is Skyflakes , a wheat-based, salty cracker. It is one of my emergency food items: I typically have some stocked at home and in my handbag in case I become hungry (like in traffic jams). When there's no electricity and it's impractical to cook rice (because the leftover would spoil), I'd open a pack of Skyflakes and generously coat each cracker with Cheez Whiz... if I had a bottle of it within reach.
