It's now time for daycare

At some point in my parenting journey, I wanted to go back to the workforce and gift my son with the opportunity to socialise with children his age. I was hesitant for a long time because the COVID-19 pandemic continues. However, the time for daycare finally arrived as I've been given the opportunity to work again.

I am very thankful that my son's teachers take the time to really figure out how my son ticks. On his first drop-off, in the middle of one of my son's crying spells of the day, I met with the teachers, Sherri and Charlene, about what might make my son more comfortable in school and I brought him his favourite meal, milk, snacks, and toys. Over the next few weeks, they kept meeting with me with questions about my son's new words (my son gets frustrated when nobody understands what he's saying).

The first three weeks were tough for both of us because he cried during each drop-off. I questioned if I made the right decision of sending him to daycare every single drop-off. However, my worries were allayed every single time by updates about my son's day (he'd cry for only a few minutes after drop-off then he'd focus on his class activities). I also knew that if I kept bringing packed food during the first few days, he'd slowly be acclimatised to the new dining situation. At pick-up, my son's face would light up each time he'd see me approach his class' playground.

Over time, I reduced the packed meals to just milk and then to no packed food for school (I always have a snack for pick-up). My son's crying bouts weren't happening every day anymore. And pick-ups were about Donan giving me a tour of the infant playground. At last, he's getting a hang of school!

I am happy that my son is becoming more sociable among his peers. He began daycare as a loner (he was so content with playing with a toy that he didn't join activities. Now, he has friends.
